Canadian Royal Tour for Charles and Camilla

Yesterday, it was announced that Prince Charles, Prince of Wales and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall will be taking a Royal Tour of Canada in May of this year. The news was announced (in English and French) by David Johnston, the 28th Governor-General of Canada and confirmed by Clarence House.

It will be the royal couple's first tour of my northern neighbor in two years. Back then, Charles and Camilla were visiting the provinces of New Brunswick, Ontario, and Saskatchewan for four days as part of the celebrations for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. On this occasion, they will be visiting Nova Scotia, Manitoba, and Prince Edward Island.

The Prince and Duchess - as members of the Canadian Royal Family and the future King and Queen of Canada - are taking this tour at the invitation of Her Majesty's Government of Canada, and the tour is being coordinated by Kevin MacLeod, the Queen's Canadian Secretary, with full details to be released at a later date.

On Twitter, Governor-General Johnston said: “Sharon and I are looking forward to seeing them once again, as they spend some time here in Canada.”

Prime Minister Stephen Harper issued the following statement: “I am pleased that Their Royal Highnesses will be joining us in a few months time as Canada enters a five-year period of significant national celebrations, beginning with the centennial of the outbreak of the Great War and the 150th anniversary of the Charlottetown and Québec City Conferences, which led to the creation of the Dominion of Canada...Canadians look forward to having Their Royal Highnesses with us for these and other important moments in the history of our country.”

Charles has visited Canada several times, including making seven stops between 1980 and 2001. This will be his 17th official Canadian visit, whilst for Camilla, this will be her third.
