Wesley, I really enjoy reading your blog and I'm so glad to have discovered you through "Smitten by Britain". I noticed in this post that you mention Camilla will become Queen of New Zealand one day. What will her title be in England? I always assumed it would just be the Duchess of Cornwall, and not Queen.
Really enjoying your blog! Will you have a presence on Facebook? I know of several people who would love to read your posts.
Hello Cynthia, and thanks for taking some time to check out my blog!
I do not have a Facebook page for the blog - only my personal page where I do occasionally post some material from the blog. A Facebook page will be forthcoming as soon as I decide on a permanent name for the blog. I have thought of names such as "American Royal Review (or Record)", "Talking Royal", "Crown Square", or just keeping the name as it is. The problem is that once a name is chosen for a FB page, it cannot be changed, so I am putting great thought into it.
For now, I am on Twitter @YankRoyalist and (as you can see) on Google+.
Now, about Camilla:
According to the Palace, Camilla will become HRH The Princess Consort upon the accession of Prince Charles as King, as opposed to HM The Queen, as is customary for the wives of British kings. The Palace stated this in the lead up to the marriage of Charles and Camilla in 2005, and they are sticking to it, confirming it again as recently as last week.
What is unclear is whether an Act of Parliament will be necessary to give Camilla that title, or if the title can be granted by royal decree as had been done for Prince Albert when Queen Victoria gave him the title of Prince Consort. The Palace has not elaborated on this (probably because they themselves are not sure).
The simple fact is that there is no precedent for the wife of a King to be called anything else but a Queen.
My best guess is that upon Prince Charles's accession as King, Camilla will automatically become Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, as well as Queen of the 15 other realms within the Commonwealth (Canada, New Zealand, Jamaica, etc.).
It may very well be that arrangements will be made (if they have not already been made) for Camilla to become Princess Consort before, upon, or after the accession.
But in my opinion, she should become Queen of the UK. I can understand why she took the title of Duchess of Cornwall, out of respect for the previous holder of the title of Princess of Wales - Diana. At the time, I liked the idea of her not becoming Queen because like many people, I believed that she had been the home wrecker responsible for destroying the original marriage. However, it has been 17 years since Diana's tragic death and nearly 10 years since the marriage of Charles and Camilla. She has more than proven her worth as a member of the royal family, and as worked hard to earn the respect of the British people.
Also, because the monarchies in New Zealand, Canada, and elsewhere are legally distinct from the monarchy of the United Kingdom, it is possible that Camilla may become Princess Consort in Britain but also become Queen in Canada and the other realms. That simply does not make sense.
It also does not make sense to carve out a special exception for Camilla to not be Queen. It could set a dangerous precedent whereby Kate might not also become Queen, and open an unnecessary can of constitutional worms involving politicians who may be hostile toward the monarchy.
Looking back, I believe that the Princess Consort stance by the Palace in 2005 was a way to sooth over the public who still had raw emotions over Diana's death. With the passage of time, and a gradual warming toward Camilla, I believe that Camilla will become Queen consort of the UK, in the same fashion as the wives of past British kings. This will make sense.
Again Cynthia, thanks for checking out the blog, and I hope you will be back.
Kind regards,
Wesley
