Today, Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, Countess of Strathearn,
and Lady Carrickfergus turned 32 years old today. The occasion is being marked
privately with her family and close friends, but there was a Changing of the
Guard in her honor, and Union Flags have been raised above certain government
buildings throughout the United Kingdom (which is standard for most members of
the royal family on their birthday’s).
Since becoming a member of the royal family, she has helped
to re-energize the monarchy and make it popular and accessible to upcoming
generations. In nearly three years, she has come into her own – developing a
personal regal style of warmth and
openness. This is probably attributed to her working and middle-class roots as
an ordinary girl with no immediate royal or aristocratic family history. With this
personal touch, she has endeared herself to the people of Britain and the
Commonwealth, who have gotten to know her well over the year. She is not a
replacement for Diana – no one can replace her – but she has certainly breathed
new life into an ancient institution, which I believe will last for at least
another 100 years.
Of course though, we are living in the present, and Kate is
now a mother and her profile as a member of the royal family is expected to be
enhanced as she and Prince William take an overseas tour to Australia and New
Zealand (which may the first for Prince George) and take on more royal
engagements. In doing these things, she has shown herself to be more hands-on
at times, especially with regard to being a volunteer with the Scout
Association. This helps to show that commitments to charities is not for show,
and that she – along with other members of the royal family – take an active
interest in the organization of which they are Patron or otherwise associated.
It will be interesting to see what happens next on her royal journey.
With that, I wish her a very Happy Birthday, and pray that
there will be more to come!
