Royal Egagements and Events - Tuesday, December 17, 2013

     Today, Prince Charles will be attending three engagements in honor of the Advent season, with an emphasis on the observance of the season among Eastern Christian churches.





     Prince Charles, Prince of Wales will visit the Coptic Orthodox Church Center in Stevenage, Hertfordshire. He will be accompanied by Prince Ghazi bin Muhammad of Jordan, and on their arrival, they will be welcomed by the Lord-Lieutenant of Hertfordshire, Dione Angela Grimston, Countess of Verulam; the Bishop of London, Richard Chartres; and the General Bishop of the Coptic Orthodox Church in the United Kingdom, Bishop Angaelos. A service will be held, and the prince's will meet young people who are volunteering in the homeless ministry. Afterward, there will be a meeting to discuss the situation of Christian persecution in the Middle East, and a reception for members of the congregation.

     Following on from the engagement in Hertfordshire, Prince Charles and Prince Ghazi will visit the Syrian Orthodox Church at St. Thomas' Cathedral in London. There, they will be welcomed by the Deputy Lieutenant for the London Borough of Ealing, Robert Leader; the Archbishop of the Syrian Church in the United Kingdom, Archbishop Athanasius and the Parish Priest, Father Aphrem Ozan. Guests representing the Syrian Orthodox community will relay their experiences and those of their families in the Middle East, and the princes will attend a service lead by the Archbishop.

     For his last engagement of the day, the Prince of Wales will host an Advent reception to celebrate Christians from the Middle East at Clarence House in London. Guests will include the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby; the Chief Rabbi, Ephraim Mirvis; Elizabeth Berridge, Baroness Berridge, elected Chairperson of the new All Party Group on International Religious Freedom, and Sayeeda Warsi, Baroness Warsi, Senior Minister of State at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and Minister for Faith and Communities.
